TEAM USA FOOTBALL TO COMPETE IN PANAMA FOR IFAF AMERICAS CONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Reigning world champions Team USA Football take on top teams from North and South America for continental crown.
INDIANAPOLIS, IND. & PENONOMÉ, PANAMÁ – TEAM USA FOOTBALL® will travel to Panama to compete in the second-ever International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Americas Continental Championship from Sept. 12-14 at Estadio Virgilio Tejeira in Penonomé. The event features the top men’s and women’s flag football teams from North and South America. Games will be streamed on IFAF.tv.
As the sport’s National Governing Body, USA Football selects, trains and leads Team USA Football for international competitions, including Continental Championships, World Championships and the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
IFAF debuted its Continental Championships in 2023. The first version of the event held in the Americas was hosted by USA Football in Charlotte, N.C. The U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams both defeated Mexico in the finals to be crowned the first continental champions of the Americas.
The U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams carried their momentum into 2024, earning gold medals at the IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Lahti, Finland. The U.S. women defeated Mexico 31-18, while the men topped Austria 53-21 in their championship games.
This year’s Americas Continental Championship features a group stage, followed by a single elimination bracket.
The U.S. Men’s National Team is paired with Brazil, Canada, Colombia and Guatemala in Group A. Argentina, Chile, El Salvador, Jamaica, Mexico and Panama represent Group B. This is the first competition for the U.S. Men’s National Team since playing a series of friendlies at International Bowl in Los Angeles this past June.
“I believe our team is battle-tested and has been playing championship football for a long time. We bring a lot of experience and have deep knowledge of the game,” said Jorge Cascudo, head coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team. “The best part about this team is that there are no egos. We’ve earned gold medals, but we won’t rest on that previous success. We know we have to perform at the highest level in Panama against great competition.”
The U.S. Women’s National Team will compete in Group A against Brazil, Jamaica and Panama. Argentina, Canada, Guatemala and Mexico make up Group B. The women’s national teams for Canada, Mexico and the U.S. recently competed in The World Games 2025 in Chengdu, China and earned all three medals in a field of eight teams. The U.S. earned the silver medal in Chengdu after falling to Mexico on the final play of the gold medal game.
“It’s about moving forward with clarity, hunger, and belief in who we are,” said Saaid Mortazavi, head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team. “It was a matchup between two great teams that came down to the final play. We’ve reviewed the film, addressed the important areas, and taken lessons from every moment. I know we’ll be ready to compete against the best in the Americas when we get to Panama.”
Global flag football participation and competition are increasing as the sport prepares for its Olympic debut as part of the Summer Games in Los Angeles in 2028.
