BLAST PRINCIPLES OF CONTACT

BASE

Form a base. Posture is key to safety and the base is the foundation for success.

LONG

Playing long allows separation and takes the helmet out of contact.

ASCEND

Ascend the hips. All contact should be initiated and delivered through the uncoiling of the hips.

SQUARE

Play square. Staying square allows for “multidirectional” power and control.

TRIANGULATE

Triangulate or attack half a man. Offset the body to the opponent instead of attacking the center of the opponent’s mass. Offset off the defender midline.

The SPPAAT self-coaching tool allows coaches and players to fast track skill development and improve safer contact without sacrificing performance.

HOW IT WORKS

Working together, players and coaches master the progression principles and techniques.

Using SPPAAT, player is then able to identify the cause of a technique breakdown on their own and correct it.

SPPAAT SEQUENCE

Timing

  • The order of steps carried out when executing a technique.

  • The position of the body during a technical sequence.
  • The surface or point of contact on opponent.

  • The route of departure and relationship of the body relative to an opponent during a play.

  • Position-specific objectives of a play based on scheme.

  • The rate/speed/moment of initiating steps when executing a technical progression during a play.

FORCE DEFLECTION vs. HORIZONTAL PUSH

Instead of striking an opponent on the same plane, where the winner is often determined by who is bigger, stronger and faster, force deflection offers success through mechanical advantage.

Force deflection works on the premise that force can be generated and control can be established without momentum and helmet-to-helmet contact. This is achieved by striking opponents with the hands on a low to high plane using the hips as the sole driving force for power as opposed to sequentially driving the feet.
