High School Football players throughout New York, New Jersey and Connecticut are displaying their leadership skills in the Timex Heart of a Giant program.

Timex, the official training partner of the New York Giants, has partnered with USA Football to search out and reward the hardest-working athletes in the Tri-State Area.

For six weeks, 10 athletes per week are nominated based on their commitment, determination, will and character. Weekly award winners and a coach from their schools will attend a training and sports performance event at the Timex Performance Center, the official training facility of the New York Giants.

One overall winner will be selected receive a $5,000 equipment grant for his high school. Two runner-up winners will receive a $2,500 gift card from Sports Authority for their high school football program.

“As players, we know how football gives us a unique and lasting understanding of what responsibility, teamwork and discipline are all about,” said Mark Herzlich, Giants linebacker and Heart of a Giant spokesman. “We give of ourselves, and we receive even more in return. It was these football values – values that I have for life – that helped me throughout my battle with cancer.”

Herzlich was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, in May 2009 during the leadup to his senior season at Boston College.

“Think about how hard you hit the weight room and your books,” Herzlich said. “How you study film, run the bleachers and pursue success in the classroom. Maybe you’re a star player or maybe you’re not – the point is that everyone can possess the heart of a champion, and we want to know about it.

“How you prepare and dedicate yourself to play at your best is something that people in the stands don’t see, but TIMEX, the Giants and USA Football understand what it takes.”

The program is open to any New York, New Jersey or Connecticut high school football player whose high school is within a 75 mile radius of Metlife Stadium. Nominations are being accepted at, and weekly award winners are determined by an online vote. The overall winner will be chosen by USA Football and Timex.
