Aaron Brady ready to lead U-19 team in Kuwait

By Bradley Stringfield | Posted 5/29/2014

If you had asked Aaron Brady, head coach of the 2014 U.S Under-19 National Team, if he would ever be taking a football team to play in the Middle East, his response would be one word:

“Never.”

However, in just more than a month, Brady and the U.S Under-19 team will travel to Kuwait City, Kuwait, in the third International Federation of American Football Under-19 World Championship – and the first played outside of the United States.

“The opportunity is unbelievable,” Brady said on SiruisXM NFL Radio’s “The End Zone.” “We put together an incredible staff to go with these young men and represent our country. It’s something really special.”

The United States will join national teams from Austria, France, Germany, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico and the 2012 IFAF Under-19 world champions, Canada.

“The game has really grown internationally,” Brady said. “It’s been amazing to me the opportunity to go against other countries and have a chance to visit them and coach football and spread this great game.”

Joining Brady and his staff are 45 of the top Under-19 players in the country, assembled by USA Football. These players represent 20 different states, varying from current high school juniors to FBS programs such as North Carolina State, Ball State and Penn State.

“The thing about USA Football is we’re looking for the top right kids,” Brady said. “What that means is, it’s not just the best players but the best representation of our country … because everywhere we go people are going to judge us more than everyone else.”

The U.S. team will take part in a training camp June 25 to July 1 at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Va., before departing for Kuwait on July 2.

The United States’ schedule is:

  • Monday, July 7 – 1 p.m. (ET) vs. Mexico
  • Thursday, July 10 – 4 p.m. (ET) vs. Germany
  • Sunday, July 13 – 4 p.m. (ET) vs. Japan

Games begin at 8 and 11 p.m. local time. The gold medal game is 4 p.m. (ET) Wednesday, July 16, between pool winners.

A national team exemption granted by the NCAA allows current college players to take part and for high school seniors to play for USA Football and not have their participation count among their two permitted all-star game appearances. The IFAF Under-19 World Championship is recognized as a national team competition.
