Canada defeats U.S. National Team, 24-6, in IFAF Under-19 World Championship Game

The 2016 IFAF Under-19 World Championship closed Sunday in Harbin, China, with the United States in an unwelcome place.

Looking up at a clock reading zeroes and not being crowned world champions.

Canada defeated the United States, 24-6, dominating both sides of the ball to earn its second title. Canada also won in 2012 in Austin, Texas, to match two for the United States in 2009 and 2014.

The Canadian victory came on the heels of a 32-14 loss to the United States just a week ago in the same tournament.

U.S. head coach Dennis Thomas, a member of the coaching staff that won gold during the 2014 games in Kuwait, told his players that while the outcome was disappointing, it doesn’t mean they should be down on themselves.

“I’m so proud of you guys,” he said to his squad following the tournament’s closing ceremonies. “Football teaches you so many life lessons. Even though things didn’t go our way, you never gave up. Remember to never stop fighting.”

After a scoreless first quarter, two long touchdowns gave Canada gave a 14-3 half lead it would never relinquish.

Then on its first play of the third quarter, Canada found the end zone again, bolstering its lead to 21-3.

U.S. quarterback Lindell Stone and the offense moved the ball up and down the field but failed to reach the end zone time and again once advancing into Canadian territory.

Stone completed 36-of-65 passes for 362 yards in the loss, but two field goals by Jon Fagg accounted for the only U.S. points.

During the medal ceremony, U.S. players offered words of encouragement to one another and discussed how much they appreciated the friends and teammates they spent the last 22 days with.

Even though it only came away with silver, this U.S. National Team has built something that no final score can take away from it.

A family who experienced China together, who formed relationships that will last a lifetime and who watched a group of athletes come together through the game they loved.

And that is as good as gold.
