Don’t let your child leave these things behind for practice

By Bradley Stringfield | Posted 8/1/2014

It’s no surprise that children forget things.

Whether it is homework, school permission slips or that new thing you just had to buy, few parents are shocked when a child leaves something behind. With football practices beginning this month across the United States, it’s important for players to remember everything they need, especially on the first day.

USA Football recently spoke with C.J. Perez, vice president of football operations for the Manchester East Cobras in Manchester, N.H., about what is typically expected on the first day and what is usually forgotten.

What do you expect players to have when they show up for the first day of practice?

The first day of practice for any team will likely be without helmet and shoulder pads. The time will also normally be during the summer, and kids will be out of school. These two facts present important necessities. First, because there are no helmets or shoulder pads in the first week, the child will be subject to sun exposure. It is important that shorts and shirts be suitable for hot weather. The clothes should be light and if possible dry-fit. Cleats are also extremely important to the first day of practice.  (Without them) the athlete will not be able to get the best footing and may not be put in the position he wants.

Not being in school presents an opportunity and an opposition for young athletes. Parents who stays for the entire practice provide emotional support for their kids just by being there. The first week usually includes insecurities and kids questioning of ability. Positive parents positioned on the sideline can be the shot in the arm that motivates an athlete who may not know many people on the team. Parents can also remember to bring necessary hydration.

Lastly, a comfortable girdle can be a way to keep your athlete safe. Girdles are made for both football and soccer that have hip, thigh and but with pads sewn in the girdle. There also is a place for the athletic cup.

Have you noticed any items that kids commonly forget to bring?

The one major item kids commonly forget to bring is enough water. A single bottle is not enough water for the first day of football practice. Coaches have one week to get players into football shape and be ready to go through more physical activity in the following weeks with helmet and shoulder pads. A good rule of thumb is to have two water bottles prepared the night before. One goes in the fridge, the other in the freezer. When kids go to practice, they have a water bottle they can chug from, knowing they have a reserve that is melting ice-cold water.

Don’t forget to bring a mouth piece on the first day of practice. It’s true that there is not going to be contact on the first day of practice, but learning to breathe with the mouth piece in as soon as possible is very important.
