Kyle Schwarber: Cubs World Series star showed toughness, leadership as high school football player

Kyle Schwarber has been the star of the World Series for the Chicago Cubs.

In April, Schwarber tore both his ACL and LCL in his left knee and was presumed to be out for the season.

Schwarber was diligent in his rehab, and incredibly, was given a clean bill of health in time to be added to the Cubs' World Series roster. Already, he's recorded three hits and two walks. He drove in two runs on Wednesday during the Cubs' 5-1 win over the Indians in Game 2.

Those around him have been stunned at Schwarber’s unusually quick return.

"I can’t even describe what he’s doing right now," teammate Ben Zobrist said after Wednesday’s game. "No one’s ever seen anything like it."

The grit and toughness Schwarber displayed in returning to the field for the Cubs are likely traits he learned playing high school football at Middletown (Ohio).

Schwarber played linebacker and as a senior helped lead Middletown to a 10-1 record. In addition to playing a physically-demanding position, Schwarber faced some of the top teams in the football-crazed Cincinnati area. In fact, the last game of his senior season was a loss to Wayne (Huber Heights) and star quarterback Braxton Miller.

Although baseball ultimately won out for Schwarber, his passion for football led him to consider playing in college.

“I was thinking of playing both sports at Indiana, but I just thought it would be a better decision to stick with one because baseball was the path I was going to go with,” Schwarber told ESPN last August.

Football also helped develop Schwarber’s leadership skills. As the World Series shifts to Chicago for Game 3, it’s clear Schwarber’s teammates are rallying around him.

"That’s why we’re calling it 'The Legend of Kyle Schwarber,' " catcher David Ross said. "That’s who does this. It just blows my mind what he’s doing. He’s doing things that are unheard of."
