American football continues to grow on the international stage.

The latest example of the sport’s growth comes from California, where a Los Angeles-area team will be playing a regular season high school football game against a team from American Samoa.

Dorsey (Los Angeles, Calif.) will host Tafuna High School, located in Pago Pago, American Samoa, on Friday night according to a report from Eric Sondheimer of the Los Angeles Times.

American teams have played teams from Canada and Mexico with increasingly regularly in recent years. And American teams from Hawaii have played teams from American Samoa in the past.

However, the meeting between Dorsey and Tafuna is likely the first ever matchups between a high school in the continental United States and one from American Samoa.

Football is extremely popular in American Samoa, which is home to one of the best international American football prospects in the world. Dorsey has a storied gridiron tradition, having produced a bounty of future NFL players, including former No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick Keyshawn Johnson.

A victory by Tafuna over Dorsey would be a major step toward American Samoa continuing to earn the respect of football-playing peers in the United States and beyond.
